2014 Bassmasters Classic leaves lasting impact

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, AL - The 2014 Bassmasters Classic and Expo wrapped up in Birmingham Sunday.

The event is known as the “Super bowl of Fishing”. Bass CEO, Bruce Akin says it was a big deal for the city of Birmingham to host this year’s classic.

“The Bassmaster Expo is where we get tens of thousands of people through here doing business with vendors and the city. So much excitement, so much going on," Akin said.

The City of Birmingham last hosted the Bassmasters Classic in 2010. That year brought in $18 Million for the state. This year with the sport growing in popularity, event organizers expect to see an economic boost of more than $20 Million for the area.

The fishing portion of the classic was held at Lake Guntersville.  The weigh-ins and expo were held at the BJCC.

The event is a big drawl for fishing fans. But it also attracts a lot of sponsors.

One of the main sponsors for the Bassmasters Classic and Expo, Yamaha, says this is one of the biggest events they sponsor each year.

"We do a couple of events each year that we consider some of the most important things that we do for the consumer base if you will. One is the Miami International Boat Show that we did last week, and the Bass Master Classic," explained David Ittner, Tournament and Pro Staff Manager for Yamaha.

This weekend was the 8th time the city of Birmingham has hosted the Bassmasters Classic. And given the success of this year, Akin doesn't think it will be the last.

The top angler at this year’s classic was Alabama’s own, Randy Howell.
