School board critic Frank Myers joins Muscogee Co. school board race

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Local attorney and political consultant Frank Myers officially announced Wednesday that he will seek the District 8 seat on the Muscogee County School Board in the May 20th election. The seat is presently held by Beth Harris.

“Over the past few years, I have volunteered countless hours for the betterment of our local public school system,” Myers said. “I have finally realized that in order to truly make things better for our kids, it is time for me to fully engage. I am confident that I can provide much-needed leadership and help change many of the misguided policies of the school board."

Myers has been heavily-involved with the school board, speaking at many board meetings, mainly criticizing the district's no-bid relationship with their legal counsel. Last year, two school board members went to police calling for a GBI investigation claiming Myers and State Senator Josh McKoon over-stepped legal boundaries in their efforts to influence the board to replace Hatcher, Stubbs. Both were cleared of any wrong-doing in late September.

“Some will say, 'Well he's abrasive and it's probably true, outspoken, absolutely true.’ But when you see people that are stepping up and trying to do the right thing, I think it's contagious,” says Myers.

Myers says he's done everything in his power from the outside, but now he wants a more direct influence and a vote in order to bring change.

“I can promise you, when I take my seat on the Muscogee County school board, my voice will no longer be filtered or silenced,” says Myers.

Myers says his main priority is to make changes in how the district spends money. He's been one of the biggest critics of the district's no-bid relationship with their legal counsel. He says he wants to implement a plan to end no-bid contracts in excess of $5,000 per fiscal year.

Harris declined an interview today and avoided comment on Myers' announcement, but did confirm she was running for re-election.

Other Candidates

Board member Cathy Williams has announced she is not running for re-election, so the at-large seat is open. The candidates for that spot are: businesswoman and former educator Kia Chambers, the former president of the Columbus NAACP Nate Sanderson and former Muscogee County board member Owen Ditchfield.

District 2 board member John Wells has also announced his plans for re-election; he will be challenged by John “Bart” Steed.

There are no announced candidates for the district 6 seat currently held by board member Mark Cantrel and the district 4 seat held by Naomi Buckner.
