Birmingham groups to hold Trayvon Martin vigil Wednesday

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Today marks two years since Florida teenager Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer.

Zimmerman was acquitted more than a year later by a Florida jury on the basis of the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law.

A number of organizations including the Outcast Voters League and the NAACP will remember the teen this evening with a candle lighting ceremony, silent march and wreath laying.

"We are always concerned about the senseless loss of life in our community. There is great value in the lives of our youths," said Frank Matthews, founder of the Outcast Voters League

The event begins at 7:09 p.m. at Kelly Ingram Park in Birmingham.
