Horizons School student hit, killed by trolley in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A female student from The Horizons School in Birmingham was hit by a MAX Dart Bus trolley this afternoon. 

Authorities were called to the scene at 20th Street near 14th Avenue South around noon. They worked to remove the body from underneath the vehicle.  

Police say the driver of the bus didn't see the student when they were making the left-hand turn onto 20th Street, and the victim was dragged before the driver realized someone was under the bus. 

The victim was determined to be a female student from The Horizons School in Birmingham, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Horizons School works with students ages 18 to 26 with learning disabilities and difficulties. The school confirmed that an accident occurred today involving one of their female students.

"The student’s family has been notified and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and her friends and teachers," the school said in a statement.

The Birmingham Jefferson Transit Authority also expressed condolences to the family, and reiterated that the incident is being investigated by law inforcement.
