LaGrange police investigating hidden camera in area motel

Posted: Updated:
LaGRANGE, Ga. - Imagine you're staying in a motel room with your family and all of a sudden you discover a hidden camera sticking out of the wall. Well that was a reality for one LaGrange family. News Three's Naomi Keitt spoke to detectives on Wednesday about the case. Sergeant Marshall McCoy with the LaGrange Police Department says they are actively investigating this case but they do have a couple people of interest in the case.

"The complaint was that somebody was spying on them," said Sgt. McCoy.

McCoy says on March 2nd a family was staying at the Town and Country Motel in LaGrange when they discovered a hidden camera in their room.

"It's for covert use. The particular camera is. It's not designed for everyday use. It's not something you'd carry around. It's designed to get into areas where people would not notice it," said McCoy.

One of their children was actually the first one to spot the camera. They saw a blue light which startled them causing them to scream. This alerted the parents who immediately took action.

"The occupant of a particular room had actually grabbed a video type camera. It was a small lens that had protruded on a wire into their room," said Sgt. McCoy.

Police say the couple grabbed the camera and there was some resistance on the other end as the occupants of there adjoining room was pulling back on the device. The couple was able to provide a description of the suspects fleeing the area. Sgt. McCoy says this probably is an isolated incident but you should be aware of your surroundings at all times.

"Certainly as you do in any room that you stay in, just go in and sort of inspect the room adn see what areas may peak your interests as far as what would be points that people can see in your room," said McCoy.

The detective says there are a number of questions that they are actively trying to answer like if the family was the intended target. If you have any information on the case you're asked to call LaGrange Police at 706-883-2603.
