The College Board makes major changes to the SAT exam

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Students preparing for college should pay attention. Some major changes are coming to the SAT exam. The College Board says the redesigned test will be a better indicator of college readiness and success.

When students open their SAT book to take the exam in the Spring of 2016, they'll experience a redesigned version of a classic standardized test.

"A lot of the changes will be more in line with the ACT so it'll be more curriculum based," said Jean Flowers at the College Resource Center.

There are 8 key changes to the new exam and one of the major difference comes with vocabulary.

"They are going to make the vocabulary words more in line with what a college student might hear in their college classrooms," said Flowers.

Students will also be required to interpret and explain evidence found in a number of sources. Every time a student takes the exam, they will see an excerpt from one of America's founding documents. Every year millions of students across the United States take the SAT as a qualifier for college, and many universities in our area require standardized tests for admission.

Columbus State University requires SAT or ACT scores to get into the university they evaluate reading and math on the SAT and english and math on the ACT. Auburn University also expects ACT or SAT scores. They look at the highest composite score of each exam and they also look at a writing score.

But come 2016, the writing portion of the test will be optional and the exam will once again be scored on a 1600 point scale. It will also have an effect on prep centers.

"We will be keeping up to date with any changes that are made so that we can make the  necessary adjustments," said Robyn Maggio at CSU's Continuing Education Center.

And the College Board has partnered with Kahn Academy to offer free prep for students.

"They will feel more comfortable because it's hard for a student whose family may be struggling financially to ask their parents to fork out all this money for college prep classes," said Flowers.
