Clay children learn important gardening lessons Tuesday

Posted: Updated:
Some children were shown that getting your hands dirty isn’t entirely a bad thing.

First-graders from Clay Elementary School had their first lesson Tuesday on what is involved in growing their own food.

A soil expert showed the students what should be used to have healthy soil.

Students will also add items to a compost bin to be used in a future vegetable garden on the school grounds.

"Many of these students don't know where food comes from," said Paula Cordes, the first-grade teacher who initiated the project. "Learning about agriculture can be integrated into many curriculum topics, such as history and reading."

In addition to today’s lesson, the project also includes a field trip, and more in-class lessons in April.
