NC State makes NCAA field; Duke to play in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. -

N.C. State squeezed into the NCAA field, N.C. Central saw its name called for the first time and Duke was assigned to Raleigh as the NCAA Tournament was announced.

The Wolfpack hoped its ACC Tournament run would earn it a spot in NCAA play, and the Pack earned what is effectively a play-in game in the 68-team field.

State will play Xavier in Dayton, Ohio, on Tuesday. That could be a tough draw for the Pack, since Xavier, based in Cincinnati, will likely have a big crowd at the game.

Duke earned a No. 3 seed in the Midwest and will play Friday in Raleigh's PNC Arena against Mercer. The NCAA also put ACC champion Virginia, the No. 1 seed in the East, in Raleigh as well.

The games at PNC Arena will be Friday and Sunday.

North Carolina earned a No. 6 seed in the East and will play Friday in San Antonio against Providence. Also in San Antonio will be No. 14 seed N.C. Central, which is in the NCAA Tournament for the first time after moving up to Division I play.

N.C. Central faces No. 3 Iowa State.

If the Tar Heels and Eagles both win, they would play in the second round.

The NCAA put two ACC teams in the South, No. 3 seed Syracuse and No. 9 seed Pittsburgh. That's a tough regional, too, with Florida getting the No. 1 seed overall and Kansas getting the No. 2 seed in the regional.

Syracuse will play Western Michigan in its opening game and Pitt will play Colorado.
