Opelika spoils special night for Central baseball

PHENIX CITY, Ala. -

Coming into play on Thursday, the Central Red Devils were 20-3 overall and cruising.

For that, they are the latest WRBL Athletes of the Week.

Despite the sizzling start to the season, the Red Devils know they haven’t accomplished anything yet.

“Our chemistry’s there,” said senior second baseman Tanner Davis. “We’re working hard, every week, just to get better. We haven’t accomplished anything yet. All our goals are still ahead of us.”

The time to start accomplishing things is now, as area play begins.

“We’re rolling, but as far as I’m concerned, we haven’t done anything yet,” said senior shortstop/relief pitcher Blake Johnson. “We’re about to start area play, so that’s what we’re really worried about, getting to Montgomery.”

The number-six Opelika Bulldogs spoiled the area opener, knocking off the Red Devils, 8-6 in eight innings, on a night a former Red Devil legend was honored.

Ron Nelson had his jersey retired, and saw the field renamed to Darnell-Nelson Field.

“We felt like it was time to do that and honor Coach Nelson,” said current head coach Roy Dixon. “You’re talking about someone who’s won 500 games, who’s never had a losing season. When you think about Central baseball, you think about Ron Nelson and all the success he had here as a Red Devil.”

The series with Opelika continues Friday in Opelika.
