Health Watch: Columbus woman puts off colonoscopy; is diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer

Posted: Updated:
Colon cancer is a disease that is considered preventable, treatable and beatable. Regardless of the positive prognosis in many cases, the diagnosis still can be a shocker.

Louise Stringer-Mott of Columbus was diagnosed in 2011 at the age of 62 with stage four colon cancer. She had never had a colonoscopy in her life, though she noticed blood in her stool three months earlier.

Doctors urge those who reach their 50th birthday to get a colonoscopy to screen for polyps which grow over time.

“In order to find these polyps before cancer or of they have become cancer to catch them early at an early stage when cure is possible when can remove them,” said Dr. Wassim McHayleh of West Georgia Health in LaGrange.

People with a family history and those who have chronic inflammatory conditions of the colon, such as Crohn’s Disease, are at higher risk of developing colorectal cancer. A colonoscopy may be recommended at an earlier age for those at a higher risk.
