8-year-old girl is the driving force behind toy drive for St. Jude

BIRMINGHAM, AL - An eight-year-old Birmingham girl named Jordyn is trying to help the patients at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. With the help of Books-A-Million and other businesses in the area, Jordyn has organized a book and toy drive. Her goal is to collect 2,000 books and toys for St. Jude.

Jordyn has a history of helping others. At six-years-old, Jordyn started Faith Like a Child, Inc.  The organization aims at doing “love projects.”

"Love projects are a way for my family to help other people in other places," Jordyn described.

Jordyn founded Faith Like a Child after her parents encouraged her to take on a “love project” for the upcoming school year. Her idea was much bigger than her parents could have dreamed. Jordyn decided she wanted to raise enough money to send a young cancer patient and her family to Walt Disney World.

"It really overwhelmed us I think at first and it took everything in my husband and I not to say ‘no’ right away and to just let her dream big," explained Jordyn’s mom, Erica.

At six-years-old, Jordyn raised $11,500 to accomplish her first “love project.” Since then, she’s done several other projects. Now, she’s hoping to help the children at St. Jude.

"I saw a commercial on TV and saw some sick kids who needed to stay at the hospital overnight and I was wondering if they may miss their toys from home," said Jordyn.

Jordyn’s book and toy drive started Sunday and will continue the rest of the week. Books and Toys can be dropped off at any Books-A-Million in the Birmingham area.

Saturday, April 5 the book and toy drive will wrap up at the Books-A-Million in Trussville.  From 12pm-4pm, there will be door prizes, face paintings and cards will be made for the children at St. Jude.

Jordyn says she doesn’t plan to stop with the book and toy drive. She says she hopes Faith Like a Child, Inc. and her “love projects” will inspire other children.

"I want other little kids to dream big because we've got a really big God and there's nothing we can't do when we trust in him.”
