Victim's family speaks out about CSU shooting

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The family of Zikarious Flint is speaking out about the officer-involved shooting on the campus of Columbus State University.

Represented by attorneys Stacey Jackson and Shevon Thomas, the family was very emotional as they described the fun-loving young man Zikarious was, and they say they never expected anything like this to happen.

"No trouble, no felonies, no anything, just a clean-cut kid," says the 20-year-old's father, Homer. He says his son was heading to college in Jacksonville, Fla. to study welding.

He says his son was visiting friends on campus when the shooting occurred. "
I would never have expected to bury my son before I get buried," said the elder Flint, "and that's like the hardest thing I have to deal with right now."

Stacey Jackson has been interviewing witnesses about Sunday's shooting, and has been told that Zikarious was, in fact, running from police, but was shot in the back before turning around, and was not visibly carrying a firearm. "There's cameras everywhere on CSU's campus," he says, "so we're hoping that there is video footage, so that will help us get to the bottom of what happened."

Coroner Buddy Bryan says the autopsy confirms that one bullet wound entered the back of Flint's neck and lodged in his cheek, and the other entered in his back.

CSU Police Chief Rus Drew has directed all our inquiries about these new details to the GBI, who is handling the investigation. Special Agent in Charge Fred Wimberly says he cannot release any further details of the investigation at this time.

After the incident, the school tweeted that Flint "turned threateningly" towards police after running from them.

Chief Drew said "a gun was recovered with the suspect." The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave with pay.
