CARY, N.C. -

Shaving for a cure -- that was the mission for some folks in Cary Sunday afternoon.

The razors came out and the hair came off at Total Concept Salon, all to help those battling cancer. Some got shaved to honor someone who was taken too soon.

"We have a choice to shave our heads," Kevin Snyder said. "Many people who battle leukemia, they lose their hair -- so it's all about honoring them and anyone who has battled cancer. And it's a sign of strength and support for cancer research."

The event is meant to honor 21-year-old Ian Peterson, a North Carolina State University senior who lost his battle with leukemia last year. Organizers said this show of support is all about paying it forward.

"They don't have to do that, but they saw what Ian went through and they saw how much cancer does suck," said Ian's mom, Cindy Peterson.

The money raised will go toward cancer research. Those in attendance say every little bit helps and they want to do whatever they can to help find a cure.

"From what I understand, it's curable," said organizer Shelli Dallacqua. "They are right on the verge of a cure and they just need the money for the research. That's really been our big push -- if we can get them the money and they can find a cure, then nobody has to go through this."

Organizers will be accepting donations until May 2. Click here to find out how you can help.
