A football player at Saint Augustine’s University died Sunday after becoming ill on campus, the university said in a statement.
Ronald Cunningham, 19, was a freshman at Saint Augustine’s. He was from Dinwiddie, Va.
"On behalf of the Saint Augustine’s University community, our deepest condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends,” said Rodney Gaddy, chairman of the Saint Augustine’s University Board of Trustees.”
School officials said Cunningham reported feeling sick around 11 a.m. Sunday. He was taken to the hospital a few hours later, where he later died.
"We are saddened by the passing of Ronald Cunningham,” said Athletic Director George Williams said in a written statement. “He was an outstanding student-athlete and also an outstanding person. He was fun to be around. Our heart bleeds for the family,” Williams added.
University spokeswoman Shelley Willingham-Hinton said a cause of death hasn't been confirmed but that no foul play is suspected.
A memorial prayer vigil has been scheduled for Monday at 5 p.m. The university has also set up counseling services for students.
