Posted: Updated:
Today marks 16 years since an F-5 tornado tore through west Jefferson County and St. Clair County. It was one of the worst tornadoes to touch down in Alabama history.

Thirty-four people were killed in the storm that hit April 8, 1998.

More than 1,000 homes were damaged.

That night, and in the days following, Alabama’s 13 News had crews throughout the area covering the aftermath of the deadly tornado.

The widespread damage covered many areas including Birmingport, Pratt City, Oak Grove and Rock Creek.

Check out some of the damage in the slideshow above.

We’ve also posted some of the 911 calls made on that tragic day.
