Cool School: Blackmon Road Middle School

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - A Muscogee County middle school takes academics to the next level, inside and outside of the classroom. Blackmon Road Middle school has several championships for their academic bowl and math club teams. News 3's Naomi Keitt shows us this week's cool school.

These faces are just a few of the award winning academic bowl and math teams at Blackmon Road Middle School.

"My favorite subject is math so I decided I wanted to do math team to further my math skills," said Elina Ebby, an 8th grade math team participant.

"You learn a lot of things in academic bowl that didn't know before and you meet a whole bunch of different people," said Emma Slavens, an 8th grade academic bowl team member.

On the math team, there are more than 30 students who participate and while academic bowl is a bit smaller, less than 10, both teams have major accomplishments. The academic bowl team was undefeated going into the state competition and placed 7th overall. The math team has won several local tournaments like MathCounts and the St. Luke Math Tournament. The students enjoy the competition and the chance they have to expand their knowledge on a variety of subjects.

"You learn interesting facts like weird things about insects and how they're classified, things about president's that you didn't know, certain verbs and how they work in a sentence," said Slavens.

"I am learning a lot from math team because I'm learning extra grade stuff, further grade material, that I'm not learning in class sometimes," said Ebby.

Math team coach Ryan Dobbins says the competition prepares students for their futures.

"In competing I think it teaches a valuable lesson to kids that we have to continue to work and better ourselves all the time," said Ryan Dobbins.
