TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Hope, the tough little mixed-breed dog that won the hearts of many after surviving a horrific act of abuse, could have to undergo months of treatment after she is released from 24-hour intensive care.

Hope suffered life-threatening burns when she was doused with kerosene and set on fire on March 20 in Arcadia. Her owner, Larry Wallace, 66, was arrested and charged with arson and animal cruelty.

Hope has been receiving 24-hour care for her burns at Tampa's BluePearl Veterinary.

A spokesperson said on Wednesday that Hope will likely remain in 24-hour care for at least another week.

Doctors are concerned about burned skin that is sloughing off her lower body and damage suffered to the cornea of one of her eyes.

Once Hope no longer requires 24-hour care, she will be released to a primary care veterinarian, who will most likely treat her for one to three more months.

Hope's burns will still need to be cared for and she'll still be taking medications.

Despite the lengthy amount of medical care Hope will need, her condition is improving.

"She looks tremendously better than when she first came in," said BluePearl spokesperson James Judge.

"She's definitely more perky.... she's becoming more dog like."

As of late Wednesday afternoon, $52,356 in donations has poured in for Hope. The Hardee County Animal Rescue Team has been collecting donations for her care. Learn more.
