Birmingham Reads celebrating book drive with street festival today

Posted: Updated:
Come the 2014 fall school year, thousands of new books will fill bookshelves at Birmingham area schools all thanks to the efforts of thousands of citizens who donated to the 2014 Birmingham Reads Book Drive.

The Birmingham Reads Project is an annual event held each spring. The 3-day-event is a partnership between Better Basics and the Junior League of Birmingham.

Birmingham Reads 2014 is a city-wide celebration of reading that is a collaborative project of Better Basics and the Junior League of Birmingham along with a host of supportive sponsors such as Brookwood Village, Books-A-Million, Macy’s, and Two Men and a Truck.

The first event kicked off on Thursday, April 18th with Birmingham Ready Day. More than 700 volunteers in the Birmingham-metro area took time to read to thousands of students in kindergarten to  5th grade classroom at area schools. Students also received books to take home.

On Friday, April 18th, the collaborative effort continued with the
Birmingham Reads Book Drive at Brookwood Village in Homewood.  Alabama’s 13  staffers along with Better Basics supporters  and members of the Junior League of Birmingham spent the day collecting new or gently used books for students in need.

On Saturday, April 19th, the three-day event will conclude with the Birmingham Reads Celebrates Street Festival at Brookwood Village. The free  family-friendly festival will include live music, face painting and games for all ages. The celebration will lasts from 11:00 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Alabama’s 13 is a proud sponsor of Birmingham Reads 2014
