When Bill Clark took over as the head coach of UAB football, he talked about selling the program to both recruits and fans.
But with the way UAB has struggled in recent years, has Clark had any difficulty selling the program to the players he already has on his roster?
Can he make them believe they can win at UAB?
"Players are going to look at what our track record has been and where do we come from," Clark said. "I say it every day. The proof is in the pudding. We can talk this good game but do we work like that? Do we train like that? Do we believe like that? We're having our exit meetings now and that's what I'm hearing from our guys, that they're seeing it."
When it comes to on-the-field issues, look no further than on defense. Only seven teams in the entire nation finished below UAB in total defense last season. The Blazers ranked 116th. Clark seems happy with the defense's progress.
"I have seen improvement just in our getting off of blocks, running to the football, and tackling," Clark said. “In today’s game, it’s easy to say but it’s harder to do.”
“We saw our guys, just specific to tackling, improve immeasurably.”
UAB has won a combined total of eight games in the past three seasons. Clark knows turning things around will take a lot of hard work.
