UNC's Folt says she didn't discuss resignation with Willingham

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

Carol Folt, the chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said if Mary Willingham decides to leave UNC, it will be Willingham’s decision.

Willingham told the Associated Press in an email Monday night that she met with Folt earlier that day. Willingham said in the email that she and Folt "clearly have different ideas and opinions."

Willingham said she plans to resign at the end of the semester.

Folt, when asked about the matter by WNCN Thursday, said, “She has not submitted a resignation.”

Folt said she and Willingham did not discuss Willingham resigning.

Willingham has emerged as the key whistleblower in the UNC athletics scandal, questioning the reading abilities of some Carolina athletes. The university has relentlessly challenged her assertions, with Provost James Dean calling her conclusions “a travesty” at a Faculty Council meeting in January.

Carolina also hired three independent researchers to evaluate Willingham’s work and they did not support her conclusions in a report announced in April.

Willingham, however, has stood by her claims and said Carolina is being defensive without acknowledging the depth of the problem.
