With severe weather coming, don’t panic, prepare

Posted: Updated:
This week, the threat of severe weather is heading our way. Emergency crews, like the Alabama Emergency Management Agency have been busy getting ready.

"We've been communicating with our state partners and our local EMA's to make sure that they have the latest information and know exactly what we're expecting,” explained State EMA Director, Art Faulkner.

Current forecast models show the possibility of flash flooding, straight-line winds, large hail and even tornadoes. Though this dangerous weather is looming, Faulkner says now isn’t the time to worry.

"It's not a time to be in a state of panic. It's a time to be in a state of preparedness and to make sure you know what you're going to do if those storms do threaten," Faulkner said.

The State EMA has three simple steps to help people get ready for severe weather.

1.    Prepare

You can prepare for severe weather by building an emergency kit with basic supplies. Make sure this kit can be easily located during an emergency. For tips on building an emergency kit, click here.

2.    Plan.

Make sure your family has a plan in place and knows where to go during severe weather.

3.    Stay informed.

During severe weather, monitor the conditions and know how things are shaping up in your area.

Faulkner says these are steps that apply to everyone.  “That's really what everyone needs to do,” said Faulkner. “Hopefully what we will do is be able to survive any type of disaster that we have regardless of when it is or where it is.”
