Columbus man breaks grilling world record at 80 hours

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Jan Greeff broke a Guinness world record this weekend after grilling for 80 hours.

The South African native manned the grill with very few breaks from Thursday morning until Sunday afternoon.

“I don't feel too bad, my body's started to ache a little bit, but mentally I’m OK,” said Greeff at about the 79th hour. “Mainly I’m looking forward to going to bed.”

Greeff was set-up in Uptown Columbus where he cooked hot dogs, hamburgers, corn, bratwurst's and chicken. The world record was 66 hours and Greeff broke that record Saturday night. He decided to give himself a little bit of margin and grill into Sunday, where he ended at 3 p.m.

He put on the event to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

“I obviously have a passion for grilling, and I wanted to raise some money for JDRF. So I thought, why not take something I like to do and make it a nice event and raise some money,” said Greeff.

He says it's a charity that's close to his heart, his wife's father died from diabetes complications in 2007. His family says they raised about $10,000 dollars for the organization this weekend.

The generosity of this city is incredible, we've had donations of $100 at a time, $20, $5, even some change that's helped us reach our goal,” said Greef’s brother-in-law Jody Hamby

Greeff cooked about 1,000 hot dogs, 500 hamburgers and 100 chicken breasts. All the food was donated or given away. An official Guinness world record judge was also on site to recognize the accomplishment.
