Four Hawks sign NLIs

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Four Hardaway Hawk athletes signed national letters of intent to play college sports on Monday afternoon.

Tyra Lacey signed to play basketball with East Georgia State.

"With my family and all my friends watching, I feel like I'm doing something good with myself, to help my future," Lacey said. "I feel like I'm a role model to some people."

Xavier Woods will wrestle at Brewton Parker college, where joins a relatively young program that is trending upwards.

"Their program is actually pretty good," Woods said. "It's developing and I'd like to be a part of that. I think, in a few years, it'll be a pretty good program."

Finally, a pair of Hawk swimmers will remain teammates at the next level. Mitchell Graham and James "Alex" Haymond both signed to swim at South Georgia State.

Haymond takes credit for getting the pair to the same school.

"I went to South Georgia first, and the coach asked me how I learned to swim," Haymond said. "I said, 'My buddy Mitch kind of helped me a lot through it.'"

Graham was all but sold.

"He said this was a college, [he] kind of like[d] it, you should go check it out," Graham said. "I was like, alright, I'll go, and then later that week I had a campus visit."

Graham was offered on that campus visit, and signed on the spot. For Haymond, it's a family affair. His grandfather also attended South Georgia.
