British, US experts join Nigeria search for girls

Posted: Updated:
The international effort to rescue the 276 schoolgirls being held captive by Islamic extremists in northeastern Nigeria is getting a boost with British security experts joining the Nigerian and American forces trying to rescue the missing students.

Britain says its aim is not only to help with the current crisis but to defeat Boko Haram.

The Pentagon says the American team is assessing what the Nigerian military needs that the U.S. could provide in the search for the girls.

An Amnesty International report highlights the weakness of the Nigerian armed forces. It says the military did not respond to warnings that Boko Haram rebels were about to attack the town where the young women were abducted.

At the United Nations, the Security Council is calling for Boko Haram to be held accountable for what may amount to crimes against humanity. In a statement approved by all 15 members, the security council expressed "profound outrage" at the abduction.
