JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL - The parking lot at the Roebuck Huffman Walmart on Parkway East was closed for several hours Friday night after a shooting involving a Jefferson County Sheriff Deputy.

According to Chief Deputy Randy Christian early reports say a deputy interrupted what is believed to be a drug deal that was taking place in the Walmart parking lot.

The 21-year-old suspect tried to run the deputy over as he tried to leave the scene, said Christian. The deputy fired and hit the suspect. The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Birmingham police were called to the scene to help in the investigation.

In any officer involved shooting the Alabama Bureau of Investigation will also be brought in.

A substance believed to be Heroin was located at the scene, said Christian. "A female witness that was in the vehicle prior to the incident has been taken in for questioning."

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office also sent condolences to the suspect's family. "It's a sad time anytime we are reporting a loss of life regardless of the circumstances. I'm sure this young man has a family that will be devastated by this news. Our hearts are with them."
