BIRMINGHAM, AL - Birmingham Police confirm that a Birmingham Police officer was fatally shot in the west area of  Birmingham Saturday night.
The shooting took place after 10 p.m. on Saturday in an area near the corner of Avenue Y and the  2500 block Bush Boulevard.  
Official and specific details to what led to the shooting have not been released.
 
However, as of Saturday 10:45 p.m. an active search is underway for a suspect, possibly driving a motorcycle is underway.
Alabama's 13 news photographer Adam Holbein reports that a large number of investigators and police units have swarmed and  large area of the Bush Boulevard community.  K-9 units are also being used to track the suspect.
Many roads are closed as officers  actively search  the area for the suspect.
Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper and Birmingham Mayor William Bell are also on scene reviewing the latest.
