A person of interest is in custody this morning being questioned by police, according to Lt. Sean Edwards with the Birmingham Police Department.

Police say a Birmingham officer was fatally shot in the west area of the city Saturday night.

It happened after 10 p.m. near the corner of Avenue Y and the 2500 block of Bush Boulevard.

Official and specific details about what led to the shooting have not yet been released.

Alabama's 13 news photographer Adam Holbein reported that a large number of investigators and police units were on the scene last night.

K-9 units were also being used to track the suspect.

Many roads were closed as officers actively searched the area for the suspect.

If anyone has any information regarding this case, you're asked to contact Homicide at 205-254-1764 or Crimestoppers at 205-254-7777.

Police say they will provide additional information as it becomes available.
