Long-time Secret Service agent Thomas “Lem” Johns from Birmingham passed away

Birmingham native and long-time secret service agent Thomas “Lem” Johns, 88, died Saturday in Hoover.

Johns spent his life serving and was present during the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

He’s pictured in photos from November 22, 1963 aboard the presidential plane where then Vice-President Lyndon Johnson was sworn in.

Johns was assigned to Johnson’s security detail at the time of the shooting and was riding in the motorcade when the shots were fired in Dallas.

Johns’ son and grandson also served in the Secret Service.
