Tuscaloosa County among new counties to qualify for FEMA assistance following tornado

Posted: Updated:
Residents in Tuscaloosa County can now apply for federal aid following the statewide severe weather outbreak on April 28.

The county was recently added to a list of areas eligible for the assistance from FEMA.

That list also includes Baldwin, Jefferson, Lee, Limestone, Blount, Dekalb, Etowah and Mobile counties.

In addition to the FEMA aid, the counties also qualify for tax relief due to the storms.

Whether it's just a few shingles, or your entire home is destroyed, the Tuscaloosa County Emergency Management Agency is encouraging everyone impacted, even those with insurance, to apply for FEMA assistance.

Tuscaloosa County EMA Director David Hartin said, "If you you think is going to be covered isn't there may be some assistance available. But if you haven't registered during the time period then you may not be eligible."

Homeowner Shelly Cassavaugh didn't waste anytime.  She has already applied with FEMA after her mobile home was declared destroyed. She and her daughter weren't home when a tree fell on their living room. She said,"A
ll I had left was hope because everything we had was gone. We had a few salvageable things out of that and ourselves so I'm glad for that."

Cassavaugh said FEMA is helping bring she and her daughter back together, because they've been forced to live apart for the past two weeks while they wait for recovery assistance.

A FEMA representative said they have plans to open a Disaster Recovery Center where folks can actually physically go in and talk to someone about applying for FEMA assistance, but they haven't solidified a time or where they center will be and when it will open. The
FEMA representative added the deadline to apply for assistance is July 1, 2014
