    A small plane has crashed in Helena Friday.The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirms the crash involves a single-engine Cherokee 6 aircraft.The crash site is in the 4300 block of South Shades Crest Road in Helena.There were reports of black smoke in that area about 2:00 p.m. Friday.The JCSO reports 4 people have been hurt, and there are no fatalities.The Helena Police Department is handling the incident now, and we’ll have more information when it becomes available.

Charges have been filed in the death of an off-duty Birmingham police officer this weekend.

Patrick Johnson, 40, of Birmingham has been charged with capital murder in the death of Officer Keary Hollis on Saturday. Johnson is being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail. 

The shooting happened Saturday evening at a convenience store at Avenue Y and Bush Boulevard in Ensley.  Hollis, a five-year veteran of the police force, was shot after an apparent argument.

A vigil for Officer Hollis will take place tonight at 6 p.m. at Wenonah Elementary School.
