PERU - Convicted murder Joran van der Sloot is engaged to marry a Peruvian woman with whom he is expecting a child.

Van der Sloot's lawyer, Maximo Altez, confirmed the upcoming marriage today.

Van der Sloot is currently serving a 28-year sentence in a Peruvian prison for the 2010 murder of university student Stephany Flores. He was also a suspect in the 2005 murder of Mountain Brook tourist Natalee Holloway in Aruba.

Altez said the couple is waiting for the court to confirm a date for the civil ceremony.

Some worry if van der Sloot marries a Peruvian and is granted Peruvian citizenship, future extradition to the US could be complicated. He's wanted in the US in relation to the Holloway case.

Altez also said the couple is expecting a child.
