HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -

An officer with the Hillsborough Police Department was injured Friday while attempting to arrest a suspect in a possible carjacking.

Sgt. Douglas Hemingway responded to a call of an attempted carjacking around 10:30 a.m. The victim in the possible carjacking said someone attempted to steal their vehicle at the Quick Mart gas station at 255 S. Churton Street, police said.

Hillsborough police said the victim followed the suspect to the Orange County Department of Social Services parking lot on Mayo Street.

When Hemingway arrived at the department of social services, the suspect put his vehicle in reverse, slamming into two parked cars, police said.

The suspect left his vehicle on foot towards Churton Street. Hemingway followed in the suspect in his vehicle to to the KFC at 353 S. Churton Street, police said.

Hemingway then began to chase the suspect on foot before the suspect attempted to steal his police cruiser, police said.

The suspect was then pulled out of the vehicle by Hemingway; a struggle between the two followed, according to police.

Additional Hillsborough police officers arrived and arrested the suspect, identified as Davon Rucker, 29, of Atmore, Alabama, police said.

Rucker is charged with felony assault with injury to a law enforcement officer, felony possession of a stolen vehicle and one misdemeanor charge of resisting an officer. Police said Rucker could face additional charges.

Rucker was placed in Orange County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond, according to police.

Hillsborough police said Rucker could be tied to a carjacking in Atlanta. The vehicle Rucker was in at the department of social services is owned by a 79-year-old woman who was carjacked and possibly run over.

Hemingway was treated for non-life threatening injuries at UNC and later released.
