A look at district 1 Columbus city council candidates

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - It's just a few days before the May 20th election and we're looking at candidates running for Columbus City Council from District 1. Incumbent Jerry "Pops" Barnes says there have been some misconceptions about District 1 throughout the campaign referencing crime and economic development.

Barnes says District 1 is not a crime hub and during his time in office he's brought more than 39 million dollars worth of projects to District 1. His challenger Zeph Baker says District 1 needs fresh ideas to keep pace with the growth and development of the district and he's the man to do it. He also mentions crime as a factor that needs to be reduced.

"One thing that District 1 can count of is that Zeph Baker is going to work hard for you. Zeph Baker has the energy to follow through on the plans and also that we are able to present the proposals that are necessary to overcome some of the challenges we're facing right now," said Zeph Baker.

"I think my constituents know that I'm a proven type person and I just let my record basically speak for itself. I don't worry about all the allegations about crime, District 1 being a crime hub which it is not," said Pops Barnes.

Pops Barnes has served for 8 years in his District 1 seat. This is Zeph Baker's first run for city council.
