Pit bulls put down after fatal Lee County attack

Posted: Updated:
LEE COUNTY, Ala. - The three pit bulls who attacked and killed a 20-year-old Smiths Station woman have been put down, according to Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones.

Katie Morrison died of complications from severe injuries she suffered while playing the dogs on April 28. Morrison was at the dog’s owner at a home in the Heather Brooke neighborhood when she apparently knelt down to pick something up and one of the dogs attacked her, Coroner Bill Harris says. Two other dogs then began to attack her as well. Officials told WRBL News 3 after the attack that Morrison was scheduled to watch the dogs while the friend went out of town.

Morrison was taken to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus and then transferred to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. She succumbed to her injuries on May 3. She had suffered a severe head injuries and had multiple puncture and laceration wounds over her body after the attack, Harris says.

Sheriff Jay Jones tells News 3 the dogs were put down with the agreement of the owners. The owners are not facing any charges right now, but the case will be presented to a grand jury sometime in the future.
