JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL - If you need a reminder of how precious every day is, this week’s Spirit of Alabama report may be well-timed.

Jordan Mason was raised by his grandmother Cathy Mason. They loved each other, as Jordan says, “to the moon and back.”

Jordan and his fellow seniors at McAdory High School will graduate next week, and more than anything Cathy Mason wanted to be there.

Even after she was diagnosed with liver cancer a few months ago, she was determined to see her grandson walk down the graduation aisle.

As her cancer advanced, attending the graduation ceremony next week seemed impossible. So Jordan arranged for someone to come to his grandmother’s bedside and give him his diploma.

"We had planned for it to be on Friday, so I was expecting it to be Friday and I told my Grandma I was gonna graduate no matter what and I wanted her to see it,” said Jordan.

But Jordan was not expecting what happened next.

Mike Royer shares this story of appreciating life, family and friendship in this week’s Spirit of Alabama report.
