Handful of Georgia, local races headed to July runoffs

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - A handful of both Georgia and local races will head into a July runoff in order to declare a winner.

In Muscogee County, the race was too close to call between John Thomas and incumbent John Wells for Board of Education District 2. Thomas, a newcomer to local politics, managed to pull out 35.32% of the votes while Wells barely beat out John "Bart" Steed to qualify for the runoff. Wells got 27.59% of the vote with Steed getting 26.64%. The latest results available as of Noon Wednesday shows Wells beat Steed by only 39 votes.

In Harris County, there will be a runoff in order to determine the republican candidate for Commission District 2. Andrew Sivell and incumbent James Woods both managed to get exactly 384 votes each. The county's Board of Education District 2 will see a runoff between incumbent Timothy Edgar and Morgan Marlowe. Edgar received 47.51% of the votes with Marlowe receiving 37.9%.

In Sumter County, the two year seat for the countywide Board of Education position will be runoff between Michael Coley, Sr., and Sylvia Roland. Roland, who held a majority of the votes Tuesday with 38.28%, will runoff against Coley, who fell into second behind by only 163 votes. Despite getting nearly half of the votes Tuesday, Meda Krenson will be in a runoff for the county District 2 seat against Everett Byrd.

Across the state, Jack Kingston and David Perdue will face off in a runoff to determine which will compete against Michelle Nunn in the competition for Georgia's open United States Senate seat. Mike Buck and Richard Woods will be in a runoff for state schools superintendent.

The Georgia Primary runoffs will be July 22.
