Malzahn goes back to where it began, Hughes field renamed

HUGHES, Ark. -

On Monday, Gus Malzahn was back where it all began.

Hughes, Ark.

Malzahn got his coaching start at Hughes High, and at a reunion for the 20th anniversary of the 1994 team he led to the state title game, the field at Hughes was renamed “Gus Malzahn Field.”

The coach has said he thinks about the ’94 team often, which finished as Arkansas state runner-up.

“I’ve got great memories of this place,” Malzahn said. “This place helped me, really laid a foundation for me about coaching. [It] gave me an opportunity.”

Most of the members of that ’94 team were at the ceremony.

“Meeting up with the players, old memories come back really quick,” Malzahn said, smiling. “It’s been 20 years now. There are a few of them I’d seen in different places and different times all that, but just to see a big group of them and kind of reminisce about old memories, old plays, it was really special.”

Ironically, Hughes has not fielded a football team since 2010. The school itself is in danger of shutting its doors for good, but school officials are optimistic Hughes will be making money by the end of the year.

They will also move from Class 2A to A due to reclassification, and in Arkansas, schools in the state’s smallest classification do not play football. There is a chance the school could petition to play an entirely non-conference schedule against 2A teams, if a program is re-started.

If (when?) it does, the Blue Devils will be the first team to play on Gus Malzahn Field.
