Some metro Birmingham students will get a good taste of the arts during their summer break.

Students from the Better Basics HOPE Center in Fairfield are taking part in the Red Mountain Theatre Company Broadway Bootcamp, being held at Berry Middle School in Hoover.

The 13 students in the bootcamp were chosen to receive scholarships, valued at $600 per person.

The programs involved afterschool students this past spring semester, in which they read fairy tales and instructors prepped them in performing the stories on stage.

Then, the Red Mountain Theatre Company then helped teach the students all about theatre production and more.

Broadway Bootcamp is a two week camp of acting, singing and dancing for youngsters from ages 5-18.

Students learn from professionals about musical theatre skills, and gain confidence, poise teamwork and discipline.

Better Basics is a non-profit organization which serves at-risk students in the community, and provides literacy programs in schools.

The HOPE Center provides afterschool programming for students in three elementary schools in Fairfield.

Red Mountain Theatre Company (RMTC) is a non-profit professional theatre organization with an emphasis on musical theatre.

RMTC provides unique educational, training and performing opportunities for aspiring and culturally diverse artists, while growing new and existing audiences through quality theatrical experiences.
