Whooping Cough case confirmed in Muscogee County

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - A case of whooping cough has been reported in Muscogee County, West Central Georgia Health Department spokesperson Pam Fair confirms to WRBL News 3.

This is Muscogee County's first reported case in 2014. The entire west central Georgia area has had 10 cases reported so far this year. In 2013, Muscogee County had 14 reported cases with 28 district wide.

Officials did not publicly identify who the one reported case was or where they may work or frequent.

All seventh grade students are required to receive the tdap vaccination, which helps protect against tetanus (lockjaw), diphteheria, and pertussis (whooping cough).

Whooping cough, as it is commonly known, is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection that causes a harsh cough.
