City of Auburn celebrates U.S. World Cup win

Posted: Updated:
AUBURN, Ala. - Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Auburn to root for America in Monday’s World Cup action.

Many of them went to the city's tailgate where there were televisions and soccer goals for kids. The idea came from a city employee who is from Germany.

He says there are soccer watch parties all across Europe and he knows people love soccer in Auburn.

“I play soccer here. My kid plays with the Auburn Thunder. I know there are hundreds of kids in the soccer programs and thousands of parents supporting them. I know there are thousands of people who live soccer every week. I knew that if we bring people together, and we only had four or five days to tell people about it, that we would have people coming out,” said Arndt Siempmann, Director of Industrial Development for the city of Auburn.

The city says they might even start outdoor viewing parties for Auburn away football games.

The United States beat Ghana 2-1 in their opening game in the World Cup.
