PHENIX CITY, Ala. -

A Phenix City man was struck and killed by a car early Sunday morning, Phenix City police confirm to WRBL News 3.

The Russell County Coroner's Office told WRBL News 3 media partner The Ledger-Enquirer Contaves Smith died after he was hit by the car on Highway 165 near the Fort Mitchell Fire Department.

Although initial media information indicated the crash was a hit-and-run, Phenix City Police Department Captain Jim Hart has confirmed to WRBL News 3 that the driver of the vehicle did remain at the scene after the crash.

In an unrelated crash, Harris County authorities arrested a Lanett man late Monday for a deadly hit-and-run on Interstate 85 near West Point. This marks at least two crashes since Sunday where a pedestrian was killed.
