Bill Peters, introduced Friday as the new coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, promised a new emphasis on professionalism and accountability with the players.

The Canes have not made a playoff appearance in five years, and are looking to Peters to turn the franchise around. Peters had been an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings, and a minor league coach with the Chicago Blackhawks before that, before coming to Carolina.

Francis said Peters signed a three-year contract.

Peters carried himself with a strong confidence Friday, yet came across as personable in his first extensive remarks to the media.

Peters emphasized three main aspects to improve as an organization: work ethic, professionalism and communication.

Professionalism, Peters said, is all about holding not just the younger players, but the veterans as well to a higher standard.

Peters said that it's not about how players take care of themselves on the ice and in the weight room, but how they handled their bodies outside of hockey, with a focus on nutrition.

On communication, Peters said the relationship between player and coach was crucial.

Peters said that in the past, NHL players would just do what they were told. But now, he said, "They ask, why?"

Peters said that he embraces that questioning attitude because it makes for more intelligent players. It also holds the coach accountable for truly understanding his schemes.

On the ice, Peters wants to see the Canes improve on power-play opportunities and have better starts overall. Peters emphasized that if you have a bad start in hockey, chances are you won't win – ‘Unless you’re the L.A. Kings.”

Francis said that there were no plans to do a major overhaul of the roster at this time.
