A fire in the kitchen of the Orange Correctional Center has caused the relocation of 220 inmates, according to officials.

The fire started in a wall of the kitchen around 5 a.m. No one was injured in the incident and the cause of the fire has not been determined.

Officials said firefighters were forced to cut holes in the roof of the building to fight the fire.

An official with the center said the inmates could remain in other state facilities for several months due to the amount of damage the fire caused.

“Inmates will have an opportunity to notify their families as to where they are when they get to their new location,” said Keith Acree with the Division of Adult Corrections. “We are going to take them to other places in the prison system where we have available beds and cooking capacity.”

The kitchen may have to be rebuilt, the official said.

The Orange Correctional Center, located in Hillsborough, is a men’s minimum security facility built to house 200 inmates.
