CSU hires Todd Reeser as new athletics director

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Columbus State hired Todd Reeser as the newest Cougar athletics director.

Reeser was announced Friday afternoon by university president Dr. Tim Mescon. He comes to CSU after spending the last five years at Georgia State as an associate AD. He also spent time at Drake, Illinois State and Central Florida, and takes over for long-time Cougar Jay Sparks, who left in April.

“I’m building on something that always has had a solid foundation,” Reeser said. “It’s not always like that, and as a result, that’s why I’m super excited to be here.”

Reeser did not reach out to CSU; rather, it was the other way around. A search firm zeroed in on him, and after what he admits was an initial pause, he dug deeper and realized CSU was a place he wanted to be.

“When I came down here and put my foot on the campus and started to look around, [I said] ‘This is pretty amazing what they have going here,’” he said.

Columbus State has had consistent success on the field, winning multiple conference titles in multiple sports and making national tournaments in a few. That’s all despite playing with one of the lowest athletics budgets in the Peach Belt Conference.

“One of the exciting appeals about Todd is he brings the ability to go into the community, build support, build enthusiasm,” Mescon said. “That creates, really, the prospect of raising much-needed funds for athletics programs.”

“I know our coaches have had to be very resourceful because, perhaps, the operations budgets aren’t where they should be, reflective of the kind of success,” Reeser said.

Reeser will start at Columbus State on Aug. 1.
