Posted: Updated:

Hurricane Arthur has strengthened to category two as it makes a run through the eastern capes of North Carolina. Maximum winds are now up to 100 mph.

Arthur is moving to the NNE at 15 mph. Tropical storm warnings have been canceled Horry and Georgetown counties, but continue to Brunswick county. Hurricane warnings on North Carolina's coast stretch from Surf City to the Virginia border.

At 9 pm, The center of Arthur was located about 55 miles east of Cape Fear. Winds have gusted close to 40 mph in North Myrtle this afternoon, but will continue to diminish tonight. Residents and visitors on parts of North Carolina's popular but flood-prone Outer Banks are under evacuation orders.

Arthur-related worries have prompted some East Coast cities to reschedule July Fourth festivities and warn of dangerous rip tides.
