Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service offers tips to stay safe around fireworks this 4th of July

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The July 4th holiday is this Friday.

Get ready for the fireworks show on top of Red Mountain, as well as food and fun with the family, but also keep in mind safety.

Lt. Bryan Harrell from Birmingham Fire and Rescue shares some fireworks safety tips to keep you and your family safe.

Fireworks Safety Tips

Sparklers are considered by many to be the "safe" firework. But, did you know that an innocent looking sparkler can get as hot as the flame on some blow torches and can easily ignite clothing?

Fireworks are illegal within the city of Birmingham.
· Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

· Adults should always supervise fireworks activities.

· Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that fizzle and don't go off.

· Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

· Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.

· After fireworks fully complete their functioning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding to prevent a fire.
Fireworks are illegal in the city of Birmingham. You're encouraged to check with your local officials about ordinances in your community.
