Don't tell 10-year-old Carissa Adams she needs to play softball. Baseball is her sport and the boys are just going to have to get used to it.

"She's as good, and better, than most of the boys out there," said South Wake Storm Coach Patrick Towey.

The pitcher said that when she takes the field, she's sometimes met with snide remarks from the other team. But Carissa quickly proves her mettle as soon as she throws the ball.

"Sometimes the players on the other team will say, 'Oh, you can't play, you're a girl,'" Carissa said. "But then I strike them out and they have second thoughts."

Carissa has only been playing baseball for 3 years, but made quite a splash the very first time she practiced with the boys.

"She hit one ball and nailed one of the kids, and then the entire field of kids kept moving back further and further," her father, Clay Adams, recalled.

Towey said word is spreading about Carissa and she's earning the respect she deserves among her male teammates and opponents.

"They see that she can pitch and they respect her because she can pitch. No one's taking anything lightly with her," Towey said.

Teammate Liam Towey added, "We treat her just like one of us -- no different."

And that respect is exactly what Carissa is looking for; she's on a mission to prove girls can play hardball.

"I want to prove to everybody, even girls, that it is possible for us to play," Carissa said.

And if that means bringing the boys to their knees along the way, then so be it.

"Seeing them cry when I strike them out," Carissa said.

Carissa was also part of an all-girls baseball team that went out to California and took first place in an all-boys tournament just a few weeks ago.
