BIRMINGHAM, AL -

At least one possible cases of a disease transmitted by mosquitos has surfaced in our area.

According to the State Health Department, four cases of chikungunya turned up with preliminary positive results.

Health department officials say all of those affected recently traveled to Haiti.

"It's not contagious person-to-person, so they cannot give it to anybody else. Someone can only can get this infection if they've traveled to an area where the disease is endemic or there's an outbreak going on and then get bit by a mosquito and then contract the disease," said Edward Khan, Medical Director/Disease Control for the Jefferson County Health Department.

It will take about two weeks for the CDC to test whether or not those results are positively the disease.
