GARDENDALE, AL - The Gardendale Board of Education has selected a leader for the city’s new school system.

Dr. Patrick Martin was unanimously chosen Tuesday night as the system’s first superintendent. Dr. Martin was most recently the superintendent of the Washington District 50 Schools in Illinois. Board members say they are confident in his leadership.

“Establishing a new school system from the ground up presents many challenges and unique opportunities. Dr. Martin is eminently qualified to meet these challenges and help the Board take advantage of these opportunities,” said board member Dick Lee.

Dr. Martin’s wife, Taren, is already working in the area as the associated head women’s basketball coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The husband and wife are looking forward to making Gardendale their home.

“Gardendale is a great city with tremendous potential. It is an honor to be selected as the superintendent of the Gardendale City Schools, and our family is excited to make the move to Gardendale to get started”, Dr. Martin said.

The Gardendale City School System was officially established April 1, 2014. School board members said the new district was necessary to accommodate the city’s growth over the past decade.

“Gardendale City Schools are poised to be among the premiere school districts in Alabama and the Southeast. We are so excited about this milestone in the establishment of our schools,” said board member Karen White.

Student enrollment is expected to begin in the fall of 2015.
