COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The man who died after running into the Chattahoochee River while fleeing police Wednesday morning has been identified as 19-year-old Amere Powell, the Muscogee County coroner confirms to WRBL News 3. Powell had previously been wanted for Columbus home break-ins.

Around 8:30a et Wednesday, Columbus police were attempting to take Powell into custody for outstanding warrants, a Columbus police official tells WRBL News 3's Naomi Keitt. Powell was in the process of being handcuffed near Second Avenue and 21st Street when he got away from officers and ran toward the Riverwalk. He then ran down the bank of the river and into the water, the police official said. Powell may still have been wearing handcuffs when he ran into the river.

Columbus Fire and EMS division divers and rescue officials spent several hours searching the waters near the 14th Street Pedestrian Bridge for the man. Shortly before 1p et, Powell's body was pulled from the river.

On March 24, WRBL News 3 reported Powell was wanted for home break-ins on Habersham Drive, Calvin Drive and Hilton Avenue. Two others - Javan Davenport and Jeramine McCoy, both 18-years-old, had already been arrested for the burglaries.
